Atlas Freight Systems Designated as TSA Certified Cargo-Screening Facility
ICx Technologies Fido® XT is currently being evaluated by the TSA for use by shippers pursuing CCSF certification via ETD screening
Houston, Tex. (Jan. 22, 2009) - Atlas Freight Systems, based in Houston, Tex., announced today that it has met the Transportation Security Administration's requirements to be designated as TSA Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF). Effective Feb. 1, fifty percent of all passenger-aircraft cargo must be screened by a CCSF, and 100 percent of all cargo flying in passenger aircraft must be screened by August 2010.
Atlas Freight Systems has partnered with ICx Technologies to adapt ICx technology for use in the freight forwarding environment. ICx's patented Fido® system, which can detect trace explosives either in a vapor or contact mode, is currently being used by the U.S. military in the Middle East to detect trace amounts of explosives in the fight against Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs).
During the TSA CCSF certification process, Atlas Freight Systems also demonstrated the use of ICx Technologies ParcelPointTM system - a tool being developed by the U.S. military to screen mail inbound to military bases - as an automated, cargo-screening and data-capture device.
According to Atlas Freight Systems' president, Mike Middleton, "Atlas has proven its commitment to lead the industry in more than just compliance, but also in the early adoption of technology that will secure the supply chain. By partnering with ICx Technologies to showcase the Fido system, Atlas is skipping several generations of currently approved technology to offer our clients a screening system already proven from years of field-use by the military."
Atlas Freight Systems will utilize ICx Technologies' tools to satisfy the needs of its customers, and offers all shippers in the Houston area its services for screening cargo.
In another supply-chain security initiative, Atlas Freight Systems has applied to the TSA for acceptance into its Certified Cargo Screening Program technology pilot to further develop the technologies being used for screening cargo, and to develop automated data capture and exchange capabilities between TSA, shippers, consignees and carriers.
