Fido Handheld Explosive Detectors Keep Citizens Safe at Nation's July 4th Celebration in Washington, D.C.

National Park Police Use Fido Handheld Detectors from ICx Nomadics To Screen for Explosives on National Mall

ICx Technologies Inc., a developer of advanced security technologies, announced that police used its handheld explosives detectors to protect National Mall visitors during the Independence Day celebrations.

National Park Police used four handheld ICx Nomadics Fido XT explosives detectors as part of their security operations for "interrogating" suspicious persons, bags and packages once attendees entered the National Mall through eight guarded security portals. An estimated 500,000 people were in attendance at this year's fireworks celebration.

"The ICx Nomadics Fido technology allowed the D.C. Park Police to easily deploy very sophisticated explosives detection capability to secure a high-profile, high-traffic venue," said Mark Mills, ICx Technologies Chief Technology Officer. "ICx is pleased to have had a role in assuring the safety of our citizens in the nation's capital on a day of such symbolic importance."

Inspired by bomb sniffing dogs' ability to detect explosives, Fido has the advantage of being both ultra-sensitive and capable of quickly screening very large numbers of suspect persons or objects. Breakthrough sensing technology behind the Fido detector supports both particle and vapor detection and allows operators to screen people, packages and vehicles for explosives with a level of sensitivity that rivals the capabilities of canine bomb detection.

ICx Nomadics, a unit of ICx Technologies, develops emerging technologies that focus on homeland security and force protection.
