ICx MesoSystems Awarded DHS Prime Contract

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), through its LBADS program, awarded ICx MesoSystems a prime contract to develop a second-generation Low Cost Bio-aerosol Sensor (LBAS). The first generation of this technology was developed by MIT's Lincoln Laboratories under funding from the US Department of Defense DARPA SUVOS program.

Bio-aerosol sensors detect the presence of bio-terror threat materials such as anthrax, tularemia, and ricin. The purpose of early warning sensors is to enable protective responses that minimize bio-agent dispersion, reducing the impact of bio-terror events. The goal of the LBADS program is to substantially reduce the cost of such sensors thereby facilitating widespread deployment.

When asked where the new sensors will be used, CEO Charles Call explained, "this technology will be targeted at real-time detection of bio-terrorism events in critical infrastructure, including large commercial office buildings, airports and subways." Bio-threat sensors, like smoke detectors, may one day become standard equipment for HVAC systems and building security.

ICx MesoSystems, an ICx company, is a leader in developing and commercializing innovative and practical solutions for bio-threat surveillance and incident response. Founded in 1997, ICx MesoSystems commitment to providing fast, effective, and affordable solutions has led to multiple product successes, including BioCapture®, the most widely used air sampler for bioterrorism response.
